Budget retailer Poundland is to double its number of stores and create 15,000 new jobs.

Announcing a big jump in profits, the company is aiming to hit a total of 1,000 shops.

It is also opening outlets in Europe for the first time over the next 18 months.

Pret a Manger to create 500 new jobs

High street sandwich chain Pret a Manger is to create at least 500 new jobs in the UK.

The jobs will be based in new stores opening across the country.

The company has responded to the accusation that it hires too many foreign workers, saying that it now has 15% more UK nationals working for it than last year.

Chief Executive Clive Schlee told the BBC:

"We've responded to a lot of criticism like that.

"It depends on what market you're talking about. Outside London Pret is predominantly British," he said.

689 jobs are at risk at supermarket chain Morrisons.

The company is planning to change from manual cash counting in its stores to a new machine-counting system, meaning the jobs are likely to be lost among cash office managers and supervisors in its 490 stores.

Morrisons has been cutting costs due to a recent slide in profits, which fell 7% last year.

The trend has continued this year, with market share decreasing.

New Edinburgh shopping centre to create 3,500 jobs

A new shopping centre is to be built in Edinburgh, creating up to 3,500 jobs.

Construction firm Interserve has agreed a deal to develop a site next to Haymarket train station.

Retailers and food chains including Tesco, Pret a Manger, Prezzo and Staycity are thought to have signed up to take units in the mall.

Thomas Cook to cut 2,500 jobs

Travel giant Thomas Cook is to cut 2,500 jobs, it has announced.

The High Street chain will lose the majority of posts from its retail and administrative operations.

"Even after these changes we will still have one of the largest retail networks in UK travel," Thomas Cook said.

The company lost £485 million last year, and is cutting staff costs to help it return to profit.

Republic chain enters administration - 2,500 jobs at risk

High Street fashion chain Republic has entered administration, putting 2,500 jobs at risk.

The Leeds-based chain has already made 150 staff redundant at its head office.

Ernst and Young have been appointed administrators, and its representative Hunter Kelly is hopeful of finding a buyer:

"The brand Republic is well recognised, particularly in the North.

"It has a powerful website offering, owns well-known brand names, and has some very attractive and profitable stores."

Comet to shed 3,000 more jobs

Electrical retailer Comet is to shut 125 more stores, losing 3,000 jobs.

This will leave only 70 outlets from an original 236 before it entered liquidation.

Administrators Deloitte are in discussion with an undisclosed number of potential buyers, but has received no firm offers for the whole business.

More than 1,000 employees have already been made redundant since the beginning of October, but more than 5,600 had still been in work at the company before the latest announcement.

Marks and Spencer to create 4,750 jobs

High Street retailer Marks and Spencer is to create 4,750 new jobs.

The company is responding to customer complaints that its current stores are understaffed, that they cannot find what they want and that the shelves and hangers are understocked.

The new staff will become experts in one area, like women's clothing or homewares.

Other new staff will be needed at fourteen new stores, five relocated stores and one which is being extended.

Some of the staff will be drawn from the 20,000 temporary staff the retailer has taken on to deal with the Christmas rush.
