PM: cut housing benefit for under-25s

The prime minister has suggested that people under the age of 25 could lose the right to housing benefit, as part of moves to cut the welfare bill. Scrapping the benefit for that age group would save almost £2bn a year. But a senior Lib Dem warned that the priority was to get young people into work, training or education to avoid "repeating the mistakes of the 1980s".

Public sector is struggling to recruit, says new report

The Government's spending cuts are creating recruitment problems for public sector organisations as people "shy away" from the sector, a new report warned today. The image of public sector employment is being hit, particularly at senior level, a study by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) revealed. The survey of more than 500 employers found that four out of five reported difficulties in filling vacancies over the past few months.

UK unemployment falls by 51,000

Unemployment in the UK fell by 51,000 to 2.61 million in the three months to April, official figures have shown.

The jobless rate fell to 8.2%, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

But the claimant count - the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance - increased by 8,100 in May compared with April, to 1.60 million.

The ONS said the unemployment level in the UK overall was "showing some improvement".

Royal Bank of Scotland to cut 618 jobs

The Royal Bank of Scotland has said it will cut 618 jobs in response to new banking rules coming into force at the end of 2012. The bank, which is 82%-owned by the government, said it was having to make the cuts because of the new Retail Distribution Review legislation. But the bank said it would also be creating 351 new roles.
