Employers are facing a "make-or-break moment" as many will have to make job cuts if the economy does not pick up, according to a report.

The survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) showed that a third of private sector employers had kept on more staff than they needed to avoid losing skills.

But almost two-thirds said they would have to cut back if economic growth did not pick up in the next year.

London 2012: Olympics jobs legacy 'falls short'

Sat, 11/08/2012 - 12:24 -- nick

Delays, underspends and unrealistic targets have blighted London Mayor Boris Johnson's attempts to secure an Olympic jobs legacy for the unemployed, the BBC has learned.

It has meant chances were missed to get unemployed people into jobs during the Olympics and beyond.

The recent closure of two specialist employment support organisations in London suggests the government's approach to commissioning back-to-work services needs a serious rethink, says London Voluntary Service Council (LVSC).

In the last fortnight, Sutton-based social enterprise Eco Actif Services CIC and Southwark-based charity Red Kite Learning (RKL) have announced their closure due to lack of funds.

UK job placements slow for second month in a row

Wed, 08/08/2012 - 13:34 -- nick

The number of people being placed in jobs in the UK fell for the second straight month in July, although the pace of decline slowed, a study showed.

The survey by Recruitment and Employment Confederation and KPMG said there was a "high degree of uncertainty" among employers.

It added that firms were taking longer to decide on hiring, slowing down recruitment.

It said the Olympics may have also impacted hiring during the month.
