Unemployed young want to work, but a third fear they never will

Nine out of ten young people who aren't in employment, education or training want to work, but a third of them believe that they will never be given the chance.

A survey by lecturers' union UCU showed the cost youngsters were paying by dropping out of society, with more than a third (37%) saying that they rarely leave the house, a third experiencing depression and 15% reporting that they had mental health problems.

British Gas to recruit 1,000 young people

British Gas has announced plans to create 1,000 new skilled jobs for young unemployed people over the next three years.

The jobs will be created through a partnership between leading environment charity Global Action Plan, British Gas and Accenture, the management consultancy.

The plan follows a recent report by the Work Foundation which found that, since the start of the recession, youth unemployment in the UK has risen faster than any other G8 nation.

Young unemployed more likely to be depressed

Young unemployed people are more likely to be depressed than those in work, The Prince's Trust has found.

Its fifth annual survey in to happiness found that 27% of those aged 16 to 25 who were in work reported that they felt depressed, compared to 48% of those who were not in employment, education or training (NEET).
