Oakley defends mandatory work programmes

Matthew Oakley, the head of enterprise, growth and social policy at Policy Exchange - the conservative think tank - has written in defence of mandatory work programmes in today's Guardian.

He believes that these schemes "offer huge benefits to benefit claimants", putting the case for work experience while lacking understanding of the harm that making it compulsory does to those already low on confidence.

The article is light on statistics, unsurprising when the Work Programme is currently supporting just 3.5% of its clients in to sustained work.
