Workers fear for jobs - report

A new report shows the number of workers fearing for their jobs is near an all-time high.

The study, from insurance company Legal & General, also shows that more people than ever are looking for work to try to improve their job security.

The company's Job Security Index, which has been tracking workers' confidence since 2012, found that 26% feared losing their jobs over the next six months, just 1% fewer than three months ago.

Nearly one in ten workers (9%) are currently looking for work just to improve their job security.

Stephen Gordon, an ex-prisoner who is trying to make a go of life after being released, has been interviewed for a blog in The Guardian.

It shows how damaging and impossible the benefits system can be.

Stephen's payments were stopped due to an administrative error, leaving him having to borrow money and going without food.

Anyone left hungry could be forgiven for turning to crime, and it is to Stephen's credit that he persevered and kept trying to find work.

New government guide to employing older workers published

A new government guide to employing older workers has been published by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Britain will have 13.5 million jobs to fill over the next ten years, but only 7 million young people are projected to leave school and college over that time.

689 Morrisons jobs could be lost

689 jobs are at risk at supermarket chain Morrisons.

The company is planning to change from manual cash counting in its stores to a new machine-counting system, meaning the jobs are likely to be lost among cash office managers and supervisors in its 490 stores.

Morrisons has been cutting costs due to a recent slide in profits, which fell 7% last year.

The trend has continued this year, with market share decreasing.

Apprentices most employable, say firms

Companies rate apprentices as more employable than those with other qualifications, a survey has found.

500 employers were asked to rate the employability of those with different qualifications on a scale of 1 to 10, and higher apprentices were scored highest of any.

Firms plan to hire more staff in next six months

Companies are planning to hire more staff over the next six months than at any time over the last year-and-a-half.

A survey by accountancy firm BDO has found that recent strong employment trends are likely to continue, pointing to further increases in employment and falls in unemployment.

This is the third month in a row that shows growth in private sector hiring plans.

However, the research does not cover public sector employment, and this is likely to reduce significantly over the next six months.

New Edinburgh shopping centre to create 3,500 jobs

A new shopping centre is to be built in Edinburgh, creating up to 3,500 jobs.

Construction firm Interserve has agreed a deal to develop a site next to Haymarket train station.

Retailers and food chains including Tesco, Pret a Manger, Prezzo and Staycity are thought to have signed up to take units in the mall.

Jobseekers are advised to use Universal Jobmatch to find job opportunities at the centre.
