Bedroom tax pushes thousands into debt, with more to suffer

Fri, 05/07/2013 - 12:13 -- nick

The bedroom tax has pushed thousands of Merseyside residents into debt, despite only operating for 100 days, the National Housing Federation (NHF) has said.

NHF surveyed landlords that own 91% of all social housing on Merseyside, one of the poorest areas of the UK, and they said that 14,000 of their tenants are already in rent arrears following this change.

The new tax cuts an average of £14 per week from the housing benefit payments of those who have a spare bedroom in their council or housing association home.

Unemployment is worse than government debt

Heather Stewart, the economics correspondent of The Observer, has written an article on the choice the UK government, and others around the world, has made to prioritise the reduction of the national debt rather than unemployment.

As she points out, the government is fond of talking up the importance of spending cuts because the alternative, increasing debt, is simply borrowing against our children's future.

After all, all borrowings must be paid back.

Payday loans concern for jobless

Tue, 24/07/2012 - 12:03 -- nick

An increasing number of unemployed people are struggling with payday loans, a charity has warned.

The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) called on the industry to offer more protection to the jobless in a new code of conduct due later this week.

There are no specific rules to stop a lender offering a short-term, high-interest loan to the unemployed.

However, affordability checks should be carried out to ensure that a borrower has the ability to repay.
