Make extra income

These tips from Frugal could help you make extra income. But remember, if you receive benefits you will need to declare any income you make. Some of these tips are long shots, like winning competitions, but some of them are guaranteed earners, like being paid to complete surveys. But beware, some of the ideas that look like good ways to get paid, like starting a website, may have more costs than income.

'Online Surveys and Market Research:

There are a variety of companies offering various incentives, vouchers and sometimes cash for survey participation - you're not going to make your fortune but a few pounds here and there or the odd freebie can make a difference.

Nielson Net Ratings - £30,000 prize draw entry for downloading an app to monitor internet shopping etc.

New Vista Live - paid surveys, pay out on reaching £50

Nielson Homescan Consumer Panel - send you a handheld scanner to record your shopping activity which is rewarded with gift points.

Selling Gold

Post Gold For Cash - with gold prices booming, it's a good time to cash in any unwanted items. This company accepts gold, silver, platinum, coins and jewellery. It costs nothing to get a quote and your items are returned if you are not happy with it.

Cashback for shopping etc.

Fatcheese.co.uk - is a UK shopping portal which offers cashback on online shopping. The site is free to use with a portfolio of more than 1,200 online retailers. Fatcheese is very unique in that they are the only site of it's kind to guarantee cashback to it's users in addition to live help support software.

recycle your mobile phone

Simply Drop - is the mobile phone recycling service from the Royal Mail, offering some of the highest prices available on the internet.

Free to Enter Competition Sites:

Many competitions and giveaways take place on twitter and are as simple as a follow and retweet - follow us to see the ones we tweet!

Get Me A Ticket

Loquax - detail lots of UK competitions.

UK Competitions - usually listing over 1000 UK competitions.

Making Money from Your Website:

This is possible but it takes a lot of work initially if it's going to take off. You may build a beautiful website but unfortunately the 'if you build it they will come' thing doesn't work here! Getting listed in the main search engines is important - especially the DMOZ (listing is free but make sure you choose the most specific category for your site) as this will ensure you get into the Google Directory. You will need to get lots of other sites linking to you to rank well in searches - we do have a 'readers sites' section on our links page - if you have a site let us know! A great webhost is oneandone.co.uk who sell domains cheaply (free website addresses do not do so well in the search engines), have hosting packages starting at about £2 a month though for about £5 you can have as many domains as you like hosted on the same package - they also have a free website-creator so even if you don't know html you can build a good site.

There are some good affiliate sites that have many different advertisers to choose from:

Webgains

Paid On Results

AffiliateWindow.com

TradeDoubler

There are one or two other ways to have a small website without being able to build one (but these will still need heavily promoting to do much):

CafePress (based in America but ship everywhere) will create an online store for you free and they manufacture and send everything too - you design the logos and pictures to go on the t-shirts, mugs, mousemats...check out our own little Frugal Living in the UK shop to see how it works!

Spreadshirt is a great company for designing custom t-shirts - you can also open a shop with them.

Cars and Parking

Car sitting doing nothing? Spare parking at your house? You could rent these out for cash! Of course you can also use both sites below for finding reasonably priced spaces and car rentals too.

WhipCar - rent to or from your neighbours, all fully insured.

Rent a Parking Space with ParkatmyHouse.com'
