Two new apprenticeship schemes have been launched.

Sainsbury's has released information on its management training programme, which will provide 400 people with a year's training from April.

It is aimed at existing staff who hold qualifications at a level no higher than GCSE, and is likely to create store vacancies when they move up.

Angie Risley, group HR director, said: “No amount of time in a classroom can teach future team leaders what it takes to run a busy store serving thousands of people.”

Premier Inn has launched its apprenticeship programme for 500 people in a range of hotel and hospitality careers.

This is in addition to the 1,200 jobs created by the company in the last year.

Patrick Dempsey, managing director of Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants, said: “Whitbread has a long history of helping young people further their careers through apprenticeships.

“It’s tough in today’s climate for young people to get into the workplace and find a job that offers them a chance to get on. We have a target of recruiting half of all our new employees from the long term unemployed."
