Thu, 01/11/2012 - 13:29 -- nick

Electrical retailer Comet will go in to administration next week, putting its 6,500 employees at risk of redundancy.

OpCapita, which owns the company, said it would appoint Deloitte as administrators.

OpCapita bought the company for £2 last year, but sales have suffered during the recession and due to competition from internet sellers.

A number of options are being considered for the 240-shop chain, including liquidation and shop closures or sales.

Unions estimate the job losses could reach 2,000 as the company is on track to make financial losses of £1.5billion this year.

Ford said it hoped to achieve the cuts through voluntary redundancies and redeployments.

"We will address the crisis in Europe with a laser focus on new products, a stronger brand and increased cost efficiency," said Ford boss Alan Mulally.

34,621 civil service jobs have been lost in the last year according to Office for National Statistics figures.

The number represents 7% of all civil servants, with the job losses coming as the government pushes on with its programme of funding cuts.

The majority of jobs lost, over 34,000, were full time, with only 550 part time staff cut.

Despite the government freezing pay for all public sector staff, average earnings increased by 0.6% over the last year to £23,900 in March 2012.

The company has been in administration but is still trading, and a number of jobs are being kept at both sites.

The loss of a big contract with a supermarket had led to the company's difficulties.

The jobs are to go as part of a restructure of the company, and against a background of reducing profits after a wet summer.

He said the changes were "fundamental to creating sustainable jobs and the future growth of the business".

2,200 jobs go at JJB Sports

Tue, 02/10/2012 - 11:57 -- nick

2,200 jobs have today been lost at the shop chain JJB Sports.

The chain has been in administration and more than 130 stores could not find buyers.

550 jobs have been saved, however, with 20 stores being bought by Sports Direct, who will reopen the shops under the Sports Direct name.

JJB Sports was one of the UK's biggest sports shops, with over 400 stores in 2007, but the economic downturn and expensive shop leases saw it lose money.

Sports Direct has also bought the JJB Sports name and may continue to use it for online sales.

The European division of the company is likely to lose around one billion dollars this year as the current recession hits car and commercial vehicle sales.

Ford employs around 15,000 people in the UK, and has indicated that the majority of redundancies will be voluntary:

"Ford of Europe expects the programmes to result in the reduction of several hundred salaried positions, but exact figures won't be known for a few months," Ford said.

Mon, 24/09/2012 - 23:06 -- nick

Following its buyout of Lehman Brothers bank in 2008, the majority of Nomura's European employees are based in London.

The loss of jobs could prove embarrassing to Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, who opened Nomura's new office in April last year and described the company as “one of the world’s leading investment banks”.
