Fri, 24/05/2013 - 15:03 -- nick

Companies that favour unpaid interns when they recruit staff are missing out on talent from poorer backgrounds.

That is the warning from a government-backed report, Graduate Recruitment: the HEAR and Now, written by the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) and Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS), which found that social mobility is being harmed by some companies' restrictive recruitment practices.

Tue, 21/05/2013 - 11:13 -- nick

The UK tax authority has warned people who receive tax credits not to be taken in by fake emails which ask for their details.

This is the time of year when those who receive credits are asked to renew their claims, but HMRC, which runs the scheme, has received reports of 22,000 emails being sent asking for payment and personal details.

Warning on telephone job scams

Wed, 15/05/2013 - 13:46 -- nick

Unemployed people are being tricked into phoning premium-rate telephone lines for jobs, a regulator has warned.

Karl Lever, a jobseeker from Brighton, was hit with a £40 bill for a telephone interview after he responded to an advert for a bar manager.

Karl phoned a number beginning 070, and these can cost up to £1 per minute, although not all are illegitimate or as costly.

He told the BBC's 'You and Yours' radio programme that he had been looking for work for three months, and that the call lasted an hour.

Young people are not benefitting from job creation

Tue, 14/05/2013 - 14:54 -- nick

Young people have suffered more than any others from the recession in jobs, a Trades Union Congress (TUC) report has found.

Those aged 18-24 are 10% less likely to be in work than they were in 2008, and 395,000 more jobs are needed for young people's unemployment levels to return to pre-recession levels.

While the employment rate has been rising, growth in the population of the UK has outstripped this, leading to unemployment also rising again over the last few months.

Interns could get wages paid - government

Tue, 14/05/2013 - 13:43 -- nick

The government is to crack down on bad employers and ensure those who work for free get paid what they deserve.

167 interns and those on free work experience placements had wages paid last year after the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) intervened in their cases.

In total nearly £200,000 was reclaimed, and BIS is aiming to fight more cases this year.

It will publish a leaflet shortly advising interns on their rights, and will launch a social media campaign to back this up.
