Mon, 22/04/2013 - 11:42 -- nick

High street sandwich chain Pret a Manger is to create at least 500 new jobs in the UK.

The jobs will be based in new stores opening across the country.

The company has responded to the accusation that it hires too many foreign workers, saying that it now has 15% more UK nationals working for it than last year.

Chief Executive Clive Schlee told the BBC:

"We've responded to a lot of criticism like that.

"It depends on what market you're talking about. Outside London Pret is predominantly British," he said.

Sandwich chain EAT is to create 1,500 more jobs across the UK by doubling the number of its stores.

It currently has 116 outlets but has plans for over 200, creating 400 jobs per year over the next three to four years.

Niall and Faith MacArthur founded the company in 1996, opening their first outlet in London before expanding across the South East.

But it now has restaurants across the country, including in Manchester, Birmingham and as far north as Glasgow.
